Audio and audio post-production: Adrián Zárate
Produced as part of a residency at Casa Wabi in Oaxaca, Mexico, artist Maj Britt Jensen worked with nine women living in surrounding towns to create ceramic plates from local clay.
cultural cannibal draws on Oswald De Andrade’s notion of “antropofagia” as it was taken up by the Neo-Concrete movement in Brazil in the 1960s. Here “antropofagia” means to consume another culture and refers to the complex interplay between dominant and marginalized cultures and communities. Through their materiality, these objects point to cultural contact and embodied relationships, to encounters and migrations and the limits and potential latent in these interactions.
Interactions and indeed eating, are linked to the table. Following Sara Ahmed, the table is not only a place of gathering but a site in which power dynamics are spatialized and contested, often resulting in alienation. Through their production, circulation and reception, objects of clay and wood invite us to consider our position within systems of intercultural exchange.
