When I started visiting the house, I was interested in working with the space, its atmosphere, and its light, I was interested in coming up with and developing a trajectory through space. But my first ideas turned out to be modified decisively by the encounter with the man who lives, takes care, and gives maintenance to the place.
In another moment, during a longer conversation about my work, someone asked me what type of body it was that I was aiming to represent. The question seemed fascinating to me, not only because I did not have an answer, but also because of the appearance of the word representation so close to the word body.
I worked on the trajectory based on the idea of hearing before seeing. The presented and represented body is a fragmented one, the face as mask and/or surface, the body as bundle and/or volume, wretched, agonizing, alone. I then decided to conceive the intervention as performative situation that oscillates between comfort and anxiety, absorption and enclosure, at the same time playing with the relations between documentation and action, reality and fiction.
Last but not least, I would like to share two questions that accompanied my exploration: How does one occupy a space with the minimum? How does one fill it allowing emptiness to keep on being the main character?
